Should personal trainers really become coaches?

Spending 4 days at Filex, I was fortunate enough to listen to the wisdom of the best in the fitness business. One theme that seemed to consistently come up was “coaching”. Why should personal trainers care about coaching? Can’t we just stick with prescribing exercise? Isn’t coaching someone else’s job?

Well actually I think the answer to that question depends on the answer of another question…”What is the problem, people are hiring us to solve for them?”

Troy Morgan asked the audience this in his inspiring session on the “Business of creating a difference” and I think it really hit the nail on the head, “What are the majority of people hiring us fitness professionals to solve?”

Weight loss can often seem so easy at first. With your help as a coach, your client at least goes from no exercise to some exercise. This immediately helps them lose weight by boosting their metabolism and burning more calories. Their body is burning more more calories than they need to put in so they start losing weight. Everything is going well…until their momentum and their metabolism slows down.

Matching fitness with technology with community

You know that cool app – map my run? It made it easy to track where you ran on the map. You might have tried map my fitness, same company. They just got bought by one of those multi-billion dollar apparel companies, Under Armour.

What’s interesting is the continuing trend of physical products (like the shoes and clothing we wear), mixing with technology. Nike has actively pursued it’s own app – Nike Fuel, Nike Training Club and Nike +.
